Jiu Jitsu Scotland

Who we are

Jiu Jitsu Scotland is the Scottish region of The Jiu Jitsu Foundation (TJJF), the UK’s largest single‑style Japanese Jiu Jitsu organisation. TJJF honours traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu practice while adapting techniques for modern self‑defence. We are an inclusive, not‑for‑profit community of Jiu Jitsu clubs founded almost 30 years ago and run by generations of passionate volunteers.

Our history

Edinburgh University Jiu Jitsu Club opened in 1998 and has been taught by exceptional instructors, including Ian Lambert (Jiu Jitsu 5th Dan, TJJF Chair of Tertiary Board 2017 – 2020), Colin Armstrong (Jiu Jitsu 3rd Dan, Edinburgh Blues Awardee), and Dave Austin (Jiu Jitsu 4th Dan, National Promotions Board, Edinburgh Blues Awardee). Many of their students went on to become instructors themselves and established clubs in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Dundee.

Today, Jiu Jitsu Scotland includes Edinburgh University, Napier University, Edinburgh City, Boroughmuir High School and James Gillespie’s High School. Together they form a supportive family of university, junior and city clubs, run by award‑winning instructors of diverse backgrounds and overseen by a regional committee.

What we teach

We practise Shorinji‑Kan Jiu Jitsu, a Japanese martial art that emphasises using an opponent’s power against them. Training covers throws, joint locks, strikes and ground‑work, with techniques adapted for everything from unwanted harassment to armed assault. Because Jiu Jitsu uses leverage and balance rather than brute strength, it can be learned by anyone; you don’t need to be strong, fit or scary to start – you’ll gain that fitness and confidence along the way.

Why join us?

Joining Jiu Jitsu Scotland means joining a community of people passionate about training while having fun. Joining one club in Scotland allows you to train free of charge at all other clubs in the region. On top of that you’ll have access to a network of over a hundred clubs through TJJF, with opportunities to attend national and even international events. Our members regularly compete and bring home medals, and we offer gradings every three months so you can track your progress. Training is a great way to relieve stress, stay active and learn practical self‑defence – and it’s fun!

Who can join and how?

We welcome students and non‑students, adults and juniors, complete beginners and seasoned martial artists. Membership at one club lets you cross‑train at any other Scottish club at no extra cost. To start, just turn up to any class a few minutes early, wearing comfortable clothing. Our instructors will guide you through your first session. After your two free sessions, you can choose a membership plan that suits you (student, junior or non‑student rates are available).
