Shorinji-Kan Jiu Jitsu
in Scotland
A well-rounded martial art for anyone
wanting to improve their skills, get fit and socialise.
A COMMUNITY OF MARTIAL ARTISTS BASED IN EDINBURGH
We are a collective of clubs in Edinburgh affiliated with The Jiu Jitsu Foundation, the biggest single-style Japanese jiu-jitsu organization in the UK. The Jiu Jitsu Foundation is a progressive martial arts organisation that acknowledges the history and practice of traditional martial arts but places them in a modern setting for our ever-evolving society.
LET’S TRAIN TOGETHER!
OUR CLUBS
Our clubs are open to adults and children (over the age of 10 for the Junior Clubs) of any level and background.
While we recommend joining at the start of each quarter, we welcome new members all year round. The first two sessions are always free!
Edinburgh University Jiu Jitsu Club (University students)
Napier – City Jiu Jitsu Club (Students + Non-Students)
Boroughmuir High School (BHS Students)
James Gillespie’s High School Junior Jiu Jitsu Club (Students + Non-Students)
WHAT DO WE DO?
Jiu-jitsu originates from ancient samurai needing to be able to defend themselves after losing their weapons or when the range wasn’t suitable. For that reason, we teach various techniques applicable to different scenarios: rolls, locks, throws, standing grappling, ground grappling and defences against armed attackers.
The jiu jitsu foundation
The Jiu Jitsu Foundation, is a progressive martial arts organisation. We acknowledge the history and practice of traditional martial arts, but place them in a modern setting for a modern, changing society.

Our Team
Sensei Atif
Edinburgh University Club Instructor / Regional Coordinator
With almost two decades of Jiu Jitsu experience under his belt, he’s the face of the region, representing our Scottish charm and style at every Jiu Jitsu event. As Regional Coordinator, he oversees the organization of regional seminars, social events and gradings. He’s the lead instructor for the Edinburgh University Jiu Jitsu Club.
Sensei Freya
James Gillespies Junior Club Instructor
Sensei Freya is our latest addition to our Scottish instructor line up. She started training just before the pandemic, and managed to train creatively through it, training at the park, on isolated distanced mats… Sensei Freya has been an assistant instructor at the James Gillespies club since it was founded by Sensei Atif until this year, in which she took over the reigns and became the club’s lead instructor along with Sensei Seb.
Sensei Thea
Boroughmuir Junior Club Instructor
Sensei Thea started her Jiu Jitsu journey almost a decade ago at the Napier University Club. After the club shut down due to the pandemic, Sensei Thea managed to re-open it when she returned to the city, and under supervision of Sensei Jev, taught at the Napier-City Jiu Jitsu Club for a year before getting her brown belt and starting the Boroughmuir Junior Jiu Jitsu Club.
